01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Asahi et Rive gauche, lunch and dinner have distinctly different characters: udon and Chinese-style noodles by day, French cuisine by night. One weekday lunch visitor ordered Chinese-style noodles with small cubes of chashu pork and a boiled egg, while their companion chose kitsune udon. They enjoyed the unexpected combination of slurping noodles in a French restaurant. The soy-based noodle soup comes with chashu and a boiled egg; the menu also offers a lightly seasoned salt version with steamed chicken and shredded egg, and a red miso option with yuba. Some noodle dishes can be made with thin noodles, adding another choice beyond the flavour of the soup.

One visitor also reported enjoying curry at a Saturday lunch. They remembered the curry’s flavour and the texture of the salad, making it an alternative for diners looking for something other than noodles.

In the evening, diners can choose a set menu that runs from appetiser to dessert, or order a main course. Set menus may combine an appetiser, soup, main course and dessert. Meat dishes include wagyu beef cheek braised in red wine and sautéed magret duck. One guest who enjoyed a dinner course recalled a sequence of grilled scallop, chicken terrine, seared barracuda and mushroom soup, followed by fish and beef main courses. They found the beef tender. For an evening built around several courses, the set menu offers a natural way to explore the kitchen’s cooking.

Wines are available by the glass, in white or red, and the restaurant also describes its wine selection as extensive. Dessert and coffee can round out the meal, offering a very different experience from a casual bowl of noodles at lunchtime.
